As political discussions heat up ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso met with ex-Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola at his Lagos residence on Saturday.
Kwankwaso shared details of the meeting on X (formerly Twitter), stating that their discussion centered on national politics, governance, and Nigeria’s democratic future.
“This evening, I had the pleasure of visiting former Osun State Governor and ex-Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, at his residence in Lagos. The meeting allowed us to engage in discussions on national issues and the future of democracy in Nigeria.”
The meeting comes amid growing calls for a credible opposition to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
Rabiu Kwankwaso was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections.
Rauf Aregbesola, a former governor of Osun State (2010–2018), served as Minister of Interior under President Muhammadu Buhari.
Aregbesola’s successor, Gboyega Oyetola, lost his re-election bid in 2022 to Governor Ademola Adeleke (PDP). Oyetola now serves as the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy under Tinubu’s administration.
The political landscape is already shifting as opposition leaders strategize for the next election. With Kwankwaso and Aregbesola holding high-level talks, speculation is growing about possible coalitions and alliances ahead of 2027.
