The Federal High Court Abuja, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, has adjourned further hearing in the N1 billion suit filed by Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), against the Federal Government and three others. The other respondents in the suit include the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), the Department of State Services (DSS), and its Director General, Yusuf Bichi. The rescheduled hearing is now set for March 4, 2024.
Justice Omotosho took this decision on Monday due to the absence of the applicant’s lawyer during the court proceedings. When the case was mentioned, no legal representative appeared on behalf of Nnamdi Kanu, while the respondents were represented by Enoch Simon (for the Federal Government and the AGF) and I. Awo for the DSS. Simon informed the court that his clients were only served with the hearing notice and had not been served with the originating processes of the suit.
This adjournment prolongs the legal battle between Nnamdi Kanu and the Federal Government, adding to the complexity and intensity of the case. As the court reconvenes in March, it is expected that both parties will be fully represented, ensuring a comprehensive examination of the issues at stake in this fundamental rights enforcement suit.
