Lukman insists, “We worked hard to remove Adamu and Omisore; it’s crucial for APC structures to operate effectively.”
Salihu Lukman, the former Director General of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, is urging President Bola Tinubu to focus on making the structures of the All Progressives Congress (APC) functional. Lukman emphasizes the need for the party’s organs and structures to work effectively after the removal of Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Senator Iyiola Omisore as the party’s national chairman and secretary in July. Lukman stresses that the priority should be ensuring that the party’s structures function properly, allowing anyone who assumes leadership to work within the constitution of the party. He underlines the importance of taking the right steps to strengthen the party’s foundations.
The APC witnessed a change in leadership with Abdullahi Adamu emerging as the national chairman in March 2022. Lukman expresses frustration with the party’s internal dynamics, emphasizing that the focus should not only be on leadership changes but on establishing functional structures. In the lead-up to the APC presidential primary in June 2022, Adamu’s announcement of Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the party’s consensus candidate faced strong opposition from a group of northern governors, who favored Bola Tinubu. Despite the internal dynamics, Tinubu secured the party’s nomination and subsequently won the presidential election in February 2023. Lukman’s call for a functional party structure aims to ensure effective governance within the APC.
