Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, is urging an end to what he deems scandalous pension practices for certain ex-governors in Nigeria. Expressing his concern, Falana highlighted the paradox where state governors granted themselves substantial pension payments and allowances while neglecting the pensions and gratuities owed to former workers during their terms in office.
Furthermore, Falana emphasized that more than 20 former governors currently hold positions in the Senate, where they continue to receive substantial salaries and allowances. This dual financial benefit, according to Falana, raises questions about the fairness and appropriateness of the pension system for ex-governors.
Drawing attention to legal interventions, Falana cited instances where the Federal High Court and the National Industrial Court declared the payment of pensions and gratuities to former governors and deputy governors null and void. These legal decisions, he believes, set a precedent for reconsidering and abolishing existing pension laws for ex-governors.
In his statement, Falana welcomed actions taken by certain state governments in response to public concerns. He pointed out that in 2022, the Lagos State Government announced a 50 percent reduction in pension payments for former governors, demonstrating a willingness to address the issue.
Concluding his plea, Falana called on other state governments to follow suit and abolish what he sees as an unsustainable and inequitable pension system for ex-governors. He stressed that Nigeria cannot afford to sustain such practices, especially when faced with arrears owed to workers with meager pensions.
