The NPA announces the arrival of the ‘largest’ container vessel at Lekki Seaport, marking a significant milestone for maritime activities in the region

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) announces a historic moment as the ‘Maersk Edirne,’ the largest container vessel to navigate Nigerian territorial waters, berthed at the Lekki Deep Seaport on January 21, 2024. Measuring an impressive 367 meters in length with a breadth of 48.2, the vessel boasts a Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) of 142,131 metric tonnes and a Dead Weight Tonnage (DWT) of 147,340 metric tonnes, carrying a total cargo of 3,376.
 
NPA pilots ensured the safe navigation of the vessel to its berth, underscoring their expertise in handling such significant maritime events. In acknowledging this achievement, NPA’s Director-General, Mohammed Bello Koko, expressed gratitude to Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, for endorsing and supporting the Authority’s initiatives, including investments in employee upskilling and equipment renewal.
 
The successful berthing of the ‘Maersk Edirne’ signals a milestone in Nigeria’s maritime landscape, emphasizing the nation’s capability to accommodate and handle vessels of substantial size and capacity.
