The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has taken a significant step by abolishing the positions of acting leader and deputy leader. This decision was announced after a meeting held at the residence of the National Leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti. According to a communique issued, the newly formed Afenifere Elders Caucus will now be responsible for advising the leader of Afenifere and Asiwaju Yoruba. The respected elder, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, is a member of this caucus, which also includes prominent figures such as Olu Falae, Senator Femi Okunrounmu, and Prof. Banji Akintoye.
In addition to the structural changes within Afenifere, the group expressed discontent over the state of the nation, particularly addressing socio-economic and security challenges. Afenifere stressed the need for a restructuring of the country and urged President Bola Tinubu to take decisive steps in this regard. The group emphasized the urgency of reworking the security architecture to ensure the safety of Nigerians, suggesting that states and local governments willing to establish their police services should be granted the necessary powers.
Afenifere highlighted recent events, including the tragic blast in Ibadan, as indicators of the imperative to decentralize control over certain aspects of governance. The group argued that allowing federating units to control mineral resources, especially in terms of mining and exploration, could enhance security measures. This move, according to Afenifere, would empower local authorities to have better oversight and prevent incidents such as the recent explosion in Ibadan that claimed lives and caused extensive damage.
