Jimi Solanke, a luminary in the realm of performing arts, has departed this mortal coil, leaving behind a rich legacy that traversed seven decades and made an indelible imprint on diverse platforms.
The demise of the folk singer, poet, and dramatist occurred on Monday, a mere 59 days prior to his 82nd birthday.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State officially confirmed this somber development through an official statement.
Born on July 4, 1942, in Ipara Remo, Jimi Solanke embarked on his artistic odyssey as a founding member of the Orisun Theatre Group, an establishment spearheaded by the esteemed Wole Soyinka, in the year 1961.
His artistic endeavors spanned a wide spectrum, resonating across multiple decades and captivating audiences from the inception of Western Nigeria Television in the 1960s to international stages in Senegal and Algeria during the 1970s.
Solanke’s prowess manifested vividly in his memorable portrayals in productions such as “Death and the King’s Horseman,” “Kurunmi,” “Kongi’s Harvest,” “The Divorce,” and “Ovaramwen Nogbaisi.”
He garnered acclaim from prestigious publications like The Oxford Times, which hailed him as a “Skilled Nigerian Actor,” and The New York Times, which lauded his performance as the star of an “Excellent Troupe” during a rendition of Wole Soyinka’s “Kongi’s Harvest.”
Apart from his theatrical accomplishments, the late Solanke was a proficient songwriter, captivating performer, adept visual artist, and captivating storyteller.
In extending condolences to the bereaved family, Governor Abiodun lamented the colossal loss suffered by the theatrical community in the state, paying homage to Solanke’s enduring contributions that brought acclaim to Ogun State, particularly during his tenure at the University of Ibadan School of Drama.
The governor urged Solanke’s relatives and admirers to commemorate his life and safeguard the invaluable legacies he bequeathed for posterity.
Renowned for his unwavering commitment to the arts, Jimi Solanke, affectionately known as “Baba Agba” by his legion of admirers nationwide, served as a distinguished ambassador of Ogun State, championing the rich culture and heritage of the Yoruba people on the global stage through his dramatic performances, musical compositions, poetic expressions, and other artistic endeavors.
As one of the founding members of the Orisun Theatre Group established by Professor Wole Soyinka in 1961, Solanke infused decades of diverse experiences and insights into the global entertainment landscape, spanning various broadcasting networks, nations, and festivals, thereby significantly impacting the sector.
