President Emphasizes Commitment to Local Food Production in Emergency Meeting with Governors and Security Chiefs

Reading Time: 2 minutes
Dear Fellow Nigerians,

I want to reiterate my administration’s unwavering commitment to developing homegrown solutions to address our nation’s food security challenges. We are determined to bolster local food production and eliminate all forms of rent-seeking associated with food importation.

Today, during an emergency meeting at the State House, I reiterated this commitment alongside all 36 state governors, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the DSS, and several ministers.

Regarding the security of lives and property, I have approved the formation of a committee comprising state governors and federal government representatives to explore the feasibility of establishing state police. Additionally, I have endorsed the training and equipping of forest rangers by sub-national governments to safeguard our communities and natural resources.

My position on this matter is clear: we must thoroughly examine the issues raised, including the potential establishment of state police.

Turning to food security concerns, recent reports of food hoarding in warehouses, particularly in Kano and other areas, are deeply concerning. I have directed the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of the DSS to coordinate efforts to inspect these warehouses and take necessary actions.

We cannot tolerate speculators, hoarders, and rent-seekers undermining our efforts to ensure food availability for all Nigerians. I will not endorse the establishment of a price control board or the importation of food. Instead, we must empower our farmers with supportive schemes to increase food production.

Furthermore, we must swiftly implement livestock development and management plans, including dairy farming, to diversify our agricultural sector.

Regarding monetary policy and the role of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), I urge all governors to trust the CBN’s management of our country’s monetary policy. Designated institutions must fulfill their mandates effectively, and we must allow them the space to do so.

The fluctuation of foreign exchange rates has caused undue disruption in the market. Not everyone can be an expert, and we must trust the professionals entrusted with these responsibilities. We will address failures promptly and efficiently.

I call on all governors to prioritize the welfare and prosperity of our people in their development programs. The federal government remains committed to enhancing the nation’s revenue profile.

As leaders, we must collaborate to address insecurity, food security, and the issue of out-of-school children.

Thank you for your attention and support.
