79th UNGA: VP Shettima Pushes for Stronger International Cooperation, OACPS Applauds Nigeria’s Leadership

Nigeria’s Commitment to International Partnerships

Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering stronger international partnerships, particularly with the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS). On the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, highlighted Nigeria’s dedication to promoting international cooperation and collaboration within the OACPS. The Vice President emphasized the need to strengthen relations between member states in facing global challenges.

During a high-level meeting chaired by Angola, VP Shettima stressed the importance of solidarity among OACPS member states. He noted that these partnerships are crucial for addressing global issues and advancing shared interests. The Vice President also pointed out Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to OACPS objectives while addressing national concerns that require international cooperation.

According to Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, VP Shettima outlined Nigeria’s strategy to leverage its position as Africa’s most populous country. This strategy includes advocating for OACPS interests on the global stage, promoting fair treatment in international financial systems, and enhancing relationships with both developing and developed nations. Nigeria’s efforts aim to ensure that OACPS member states receive equal opportunities in global governance and economic structures.

Georges Rebelo Pinto Chikoti, Secretary-General of OACPS, praised Nigeria’s leadership within the organization during the meeting. Chikoti referred to Nigeria as the “motor of the OACPS” and acknowledged the country’s significant contributions to the group. He expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s consistent involvement and highlighted its crucial role in driving the organization forward.

Chikoti also emphasized that the meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation between Nigeria and other OACPS member states. He noted that Nigeria has been a key player in advancing the objectives of the OACPS and has continuously demonstrated leadership in fostering regional and international partnerships. This ongoing cooperation is vital to addressing both regional and global challenges.

The 79th UNGA has provided Nigeria with a platform to not only address global issues but also further solidify its international partnerships within the OACPS. Through these efforts, Nigeria continues to demonstrate its leadership and commitment to global diplomacy. By promoting cooperation among member states, Nigeria plays a pivotal role in strengthening the global influence of the OACPS.
