President Bola Tinubu has warmly congratulated Ghana’s newly re-elected leader, John Mahama, as he assumed office once again. Acknowledging the long-standing and unbreakable ties between Nigeria and Ghana, Tinubu affirmed Nigeria’s steadfast support for its West African neighbor.
In an atmosphere filled with anticipation and camaraderie, President Mahama was sworn in on Tuesday in Accra, marking his return to office after serving as Ghana’s head of state from 2012 until early 2017.
Tinubu, who attended the historic inauguration as one of the dignitaries, expressed his admiration for Mahama, emphasizing the enduring bond they share. “President John Mahama and I share a deep friendship,” Tinubu remarked in his speech. “My dear brother, I am here to collaborate with you. You can always count on Nigeria’s support and goodwill whenever it is needed. We stand as your brothers and sisters, and the strength of our bond is unshakable.”
The election, which saw Mahama emerge victorious with more than 50% of the vote, was a triumph that symbolized the thriving democratic spirit in Africa. His win, secured against Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), serves as a testament to Ghana’s political maturity, as Tinubu acknowledged.
Tinubu spoke with pride about the democratic milestone, declaring, “This victory dispels any doubts about Africa’s capability to engage in democratic and constructive endeavors. Ghana has decisively answered this question.”
He continued, addressing the gathering in the warm Accra sun, “It is high time that the critics of Africa cease questioning our resolve, for we have made significant strides. Nigeria, Ghana, and our continental neighbors have nothing to prove to anyone but ourselves.”
In his tribute, Tinubu hailed Mahama as a visionary leader who is deeply committed to the welfare of his nation and its people. “He is a man of profound patriotism, fully devoted to his country. His belief in Ghana’s mission and destiny is unwavering,” Tinubu praised. “No leader can be asked to give more than this.”
As he concluded, Tinubu wished Mahama’s administration much success, expressing his hope for continued progress not only for Ghana but for the entire region of West Africa. “May your leadership bring prosperity to the people of Ghana and contribute to the advancement of our region,” he said.
