House of Representatives Deputy Chief Whip Onanuga Passes Away at 59

The Deputy Chief Whip of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, has departed this earthly realm at the age of 59. Born on December 2, 1965, the lawmaker succumbed on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, following a brief but undisclosed ailment.
Representing the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, Onanuga’s legislative tenure was marked by unwavering commitment and fervent advocacy.
An Irreplaceable Force in Governance
The House of Representatives, through its spokesperson Akin Rotimi, conveyed profound grief over the unexpected loss of a figure renowned for her unrelenting passion and dedication to nation-building.
Rotimi extolled her virtues, stating, “Fondly referred to as ‘Ijaya,’ Rep. Onanuga epitomized intellect and grace. Her humility and relentless pursuit of excellence earned her profound respect among her colleagues and unwavering admiration from her constituents.”
He added, “Our heartfelt sympathies extend to her family, friends, associates, and the people of Ogun State—most especially those from the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency. Her passing is a reminder of the fragility of life, but her enduring legacy of service will ignite inspiration for generations to come.”
Funeral arrangements, as revealed, will be communicated by her family in due time.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, in a poignant tribute, described Onanuga’s death as an immeasurable void. The governor’s condolence message painted her as a stalwart leader and an unwavering advocate for societal progress.
“The demise of Hon. Onanuga is both shocking and profoundly disheartening. She was a fearless leader, a dependable party stalwart, and an indomitable mobilizer who dedicated her life to uplifting her people. Onanuga first entered the House of Representatives in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). During her initial term, she chaired the Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the 9th Assembly, spearheading transformative policies for women’s empowerment and social betterment.
Re-elected in 2023, she ascended to the role of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly, where her leadership radiated a sense of purpose and unyielding resolve.
