Military Affirms Resolve to Dismantle Terror Networks, Cites Infiltration by Foreign Agents

Reading Time: 2 minutes

An indeterminate number of military operatives remain unaccounted for following a recent ambush orchestrated by Boko Haram militants in Baga, near the periphery of Lake Chad. This unsettling development underscores the intensifying complexities faced by Nigeria’s armed forces in their relentless crusade against insurgency.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), through its spokesperson, Major General Edward Buba, has pledged unwavering determination to neutralize both the terrorist groups and the local collaborators who have been aiding their operations. Addressing a press briefing in Abuja, General Buba highlighted the resurgence of attacks in Borno State, attributing it to an influx of foreign combatants bolstering the ranks of the insurgents.
Surge in Threats Linked to Cross-Border Reinforcements
General Buba detailed how fighters from the Sahelian belt have infiltrated the region, reinforcing the operational capabilities of Boko Haram and its affiliates. He emphasized that these foreign elements have further compounded the situation by capitalizing on the complicity of local collaborators, who serve as informants, divulging critical troop movements to the insurgents.
“Recent attacks in Damboa, Chibok, and Gwoza are emblematic of this disturbing trend,” Buba remarked. “The resurgence of these atrocities is fueled by a convergence of external reinforcements and internal betrayals. Nonetheless, our forces remain resolute in their mission to eradicate these threats and secure the nation’s stability.”
Sobering Casualties in the Theatre of Operations
In a tragic twist, soldiers engaged in the recovery of bodies from an earlier massacre—where 40 civilians were ruthlessly slain by insurgents—fell into an ambush that claimed the lives of several troops. Days later, another devastating assault linked to Islamic State-aligned terrorists resulted in the death of six soldiers during a raid on a military base in Borno.
Despite these setbacks, the DHQ reaffirmed the military’s vigilance and steadfastness in addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by insurgency. General Buba underscored the strategic importance of dismantling the network of collaborators to undermine the insurgents’ operational efficacy.
The military’s commitment to safeguarding the sovereignty and security of Nigeria remains unwavering, even as the evolving dynamics of terrorism demand heightened precision, collaboration, and adaptability in the fight against this menace.
