PDP Governors Urge NWC to Defer NEC Meeting to March 13

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In adherence to Section 31(4) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Constitution, which mandates that a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting be convened every three months, the PDP Governors’ Forum has advised the National Working
Committee (NWC) to postpone the upcoming NEC gathering to March 13, 2025.

This recommendation was contained in a communiqué issued after a strategic assembly in Asaba, the Delta State capital, where 12 PDP governors were in attendance. The Bauchi State Governor and Forum Chairman, Bala Mohammed, endorsed the
communiqué, which encapsulated discussions on the party’s internal dynamics and the state of the nation at the close of 2024.

The communiqué highlighted that the governors thoroughly assessed the performance of PDP-led states, scrutinized the prevailing socio-economic landscape, and examined national security, infrastructure, and governance challenges.
The Forum lauded member-state governors for spearheading policy initiatives designed to alleviate economic hardships while laying the groundwork for sustainable development.

On the contentious issue surrounding the National Secretary’s position within the NWC, the Forum welcomed ongoing efforts to resolve the impasse and reaffirmed its endorsement of the Court of Appeal’s ruling.
Consequently, the governors urged the NWC to expedite the implementation of the court’s verdict.

After reviewing all legally mandated notices required for the valid convocation of a NEC session, the Forum strongly recommended that the NWC shift the meeting to March 13, 2025.

The NWC, under the acting chairmanship of Alhaji Umar Damagum, has previously twice postponed the NEC meeting over the past three months —a move that was vehemently opposed by the Board of Trustees (BoT).
While the meeting had initially been rescheduled for February, the governors are now pushing for an extension to allow for broader consultation and enhanced preparation.

The NEC remains the apex decision-making organ within the PDP, comprising an influential mix of party stakeholders, including:

– Sitting and former governors
– Incumbent and past presidents
– *Former vice-presidents*
– The chairman and secretary of the BoT
– Principal officers of the National Assembly
– State party chairmen
– NWC members
– Founding party stalwarts, among others.

With internal leadership challenges and strategic governance concerns shaping the PDP’s trajectory, the Forum’s call for an extension underscores the need for consensus-building in navigating the party’s future.
