Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has revealed why he decided to release his 2016 blockbuster The CEO on YouTube, making it freely accessible to a global audience.
Afolayan explained that the move was driven by a desire to reach a larger audience, ensuring that more people can enjoy the film.
“A good film is meant to be seen by people. Any good film stands a chance of being relevant forever,” he said.
He also highlighted the challenges of film distribution in Africa, noting that The CEO struggled to secure cinema distribution outside Nigeria and South Africa.
“As far as commercial content is concerned, Nigeria and South Africa are at the forefront—then maybe Kenya. Most other African countries have smaller numbers, so distributors don’t pay much attention,” he explained.
Initially, DSTV’s Africa Magic took on the film, making it available across Africa. Later, Netflix gave it a global platform. Now, by releasing it on YouTube for free, Afolayan is ensuring that The CEO remains accessible to audiences worldwide.
Afolayan stressed the importance of creating films for long-term impact, not just for quick financial returns. He referenced classic Nollywood films like Mortal Inheritance, which are now difficult to find because they were made solely for commercial purposes.
“When you’re making a film, don’t make it all about the quick money. Look at the future,” he advised.
By putting The CEO on YouTube, Afolayan has not only made a statement about accessibility but also ensured that his work remains relevant for future generations.
