The 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has once again been dominated by Kenyan and Ethiopian long-distance runners, reinforcing East Africa’s dominance in the prestigious 42km race.
Kibet Wins Men’s Category
Kenya’s Edwin Kibet emerged as the men’s champion, completing the race in 2:14:06 to claim the $50,000 prize.
This marks Kibet’s second victory in the competition, following his first win in 2023. Last year, he finished third, behind Bernard Sang and Geoffrey Cheprot, both from Kenya.
Hirpa Triumphs in Women’s Category
In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa secured her first Lagos City Marathon title, crossing the finish line in 2:37:04.
First Nigerian to Finish: Nyango Gyang Boyi Makes History
Nyango Gyang Boyi became the first Nigerian to finish the race, making history by securing a top-10 position.
He placed 8th overall, completing the marathon in 2:25:41.58.
Boyi earned a $4,000 prize for his finish.
As the first Nigerian, he also won the ₦2 million top prize in the Nigerian category.
Lagos State Governor Joins the Race
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu participated in the marathon, joining thousands of athletes in the annual event.
Lagos City Marathon: A Prestigious Global Event
The race started at Western Avenue, in front of the National Stadium, Surulere, and ended at Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island.
The Lagos City Marathon continues to grow in global status, earning a gold label certification from World Athletics in 2023, less than eight years after its debut.
