U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to establish the National Energy Dominance Council, aimed at meeting the growing electricity demands of the artificial intelligence (AI) industry as the U.S. competes with China.
The AI industry requires twice the current electricity supply to keep up with expanding data centers.
Data servers are already putting heavy pressure on the country’s overstretched power grid.
Speaking at the signing event, Trump declared:
“We’re going to be energy dominant like never before. AI plants need at least double the electricity we have right now.”
Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum emphasized that winning the AI race against China requires massive energy production.
The new council will streamline energy policies, permitting, production, and distribution.
The initiative aligns with Trump’s energy agenda of increasing domestic oil and gas production.
It also aims to offset rising energy costs from trade wars and tariffs.
Aging nuclear plants and chronic underinvestment have contributed to power shortages, adding urgency to the effort.
Top tech CEOs have been lobbying the administration for more electricity to support AI advancements.
By 2028, AI training could require five gigawatts—enough to power 5 million homes.
With the AI revolution accelerating, Trump’s energy council seeks to position the U.S. as a global leader in AI by securing a stable and abundant power supply. 🚀
