Apple has renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” for users of its Apple Maps application in the United States, following a directive from former President Donald Trump.
The change comes after Google Maps also updated the name to “Gulf of America” for US-based users on Monday.
International users will continue to see the traditional name, “Gulf of Mexico.”
Google stated that those in Mexico will see “Gulf of Mexico,” while users in other countries will see both names.
Trump signed executive orders renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska’s Denali shortly after taking office on January 20.
The US Coast Guard has already referred to the name “Gulf of America” in official statements.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also used the term while discussing a winter storm.
The move has sparked diplomatic concerns in Mexico.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that her government would formally object to the name change by writing to Google.
The Associated Press (AP) reported that its White House reporter was barred from a Trump event for refusing to use “Gulf of America” in news coverage.
Trump’s order also reversed a 2015 decision by former President Barack Obama that officially recognized Denali as the name of North America’s highest peak. It has now been changed back to Mount McKinley.
