Pope Francis is resting comfortably after experiencing two episodes of acute respiratory failure, the Vatican confirmed on Tuesday. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14 due to bronchitis, which later developed into pneumonia in both lungs.
The Vatican reported that Pope Francis slept through the night and continues to recover under close medical supervision. His doctors remain cautious about his condition, keeping his prognosis “reserved.”
On Monday, the pope suffered two breathing attacks caused by a buildup of mucus and bronchospasm, making it difficult for his lungs to pass oxygen into his bloodstream. Acute respiratory failure, if severe, can be life-threatening.
Despite his illness, Pope Francis has continued working from his hospital suite on the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital, a space traditionally reserved for popes.
For the third consecutive Sunday, Pope Francis was unable to lead his traditional Angelus prayer, and the Vatican instead released a written message on his behalf.
In the statement, he expressed gratitude for the prayers and support he has received, saying:
“I feel all your affection and closeness, and at this moment, I feel as though I am being ‘carried’ and supported by God’s people. Thank you all.”
The global Catholic community continues to pray for his full recovery, while the Vatican closely monitors his condition.
