The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has disclosed a significant rise in power generation, reaching an impressive 5,801.84 megawatts.
This milestone, achieved on March 4, 2025, at precisely 21:15 hours, was sustained with a stable frequency of 49.69Hz. The development was officially confirmed in a statement issued by the company’s management on Wednesday, lauding the achievement as another breakthrough in the country’s power generation capacity.
“The Transmission Company of Nigeria is pleased to announce that the national power sector has recorded yet another historic peak generation of 5,801.84MW,” the statement read.
According to TCN, the electricity produced was seamlessly transmitted and efficiently distributed to various power Distribution Companies (DisCos), ensuring an enhanced electricity supply for consumers, particularly during peak demand periods.
This latest accomplishment builds upon a series of incremental enhancements within Nigeria’s power sector. Notably, the nation previously recorded a peak generation of 5,713.60MW alongside a daily energy distribution of 125,542.06MWh. Earlier, on February 14, 2025, the sector also attained a peak of 5,543.20MW with a corresponding daily energy supply of 125,159.48MWh, all of which were successfully relayed to the designated load centres by TCN.
The company attributed this steady progress to the concerted efforts of the Federal Government, power generation firms (GenCos), TCN, and DisCos, all working towards fortifying the national grid and improving nationwide electricity supply.
“The consistent rise in power generation signifies a gradual reinforcement of the national grid, underscoring the relentless commitment of all stakeholders toward fortifying Nigeria’s electricity framework. This milestone further exemplifies the unwavering dedication of the present administration and all involved entities in enhancing the nation’s power sector,” the statement noted.
Despite this commendable improvement, the generated 5,801.84MW remains substantially insufficient for Nigeria’s rapidly growing population, which exceeds 200 million. Energy experts maintain that the nation requires a minimum power generation capacity of 30,000MW to achieve self-sufficiency and meet the demands of its industrial and residential sectors.
