In a move underscoring the gravity of prevailing security concerns, the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has officially called off this year’s Sallah festivities, including the revered Durbar procession. Expressing profound regret over the decision, he reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property within the state.

During a public address on Wednesday, Emir Bayero articulated the necessity of this resolution, citing the imperative to prioritize communal stability over ceremonial obligations.

“In deference to the trust reposed in us by the people and our solemn duty to uphold their safety, we find it prudent to rescind all preparatory arrangements for the Sallah celebrations given the prevailing circumstances,” he declared.

The Emir emphasized that the verdict was reached following exhaustive deliberations with religious authorities and key stakeholders, who counseled against proceeding with the annual festivities in light of mounting security apprehensions. While acknowledging the deep cultural significance of the Durbar, he asserted that such traditions must never imperil societal tranquility.

“The Sallah Durbar, though steeped in heritage, is not an indispensable obligation. If its execution bears the risk of sowing discord, endangering lives, or precipitating unrest, then prudence dictates its postponement,” he stated.

Expressing optimism that this precautionary measure would fortify the prospects of enduring peace within Kano and beyond, Emir Bayero extended heartfelt apologies to the populace. He urged the people of the state to embrace the decision in the collective interest of stability and order.

Notably, prior to this announcement, Emir Bayero had formally communicated with law enforcement authorities regarding his intent to proceed with the Durbar. However, emerging security assessments raised concerns about potential unrest, particularly as the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, was reportedly making parallel arrangements for a similar event.

This development has further exacerbated tensions within the Kano Emirate, deepening the leadership dispute and intensifying the rivalry between supporters of both traditional authorities. While security agencies have yet to release an official statement, speculations abound that stringent precautionary measures are being undertaken to preempt any possibility of civil disturbances.
