Atiku Abubakar criticizes Tinubu’s absence amid Nigeria’s insecurity crisis

The Presidency has rebuffed a statement made by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who called on President Bola Tinubu to step aside if he couldn’t address the nation’s security challenges, labeling the statement as “reckless.” Atiku accused Tinubu of neglecting the nation’s security while on a purported private visit, highlighting recent tragic incidents of kidnappings and killings.

In his statement, Atiku criticized Tinubu’s handling of Nigeria’s security crisis, implying that Tinubu should relinquish his position if he finds it overwhelming. Atiku emphasized the urgent need for round-the-clock leadership to confront the prevalent insecurity and economic downturn plaguing the nation.

Atiku’s comments came shortly after he questioned President Tinubu about a $3.3 billion NNPC loan repayment deal. The Presidency responded to Atiku’s remarks, dismissing them as baseless and defending Tinubu’s handling of security matters, affirming that Tinubu is closely monitoring developments in the country despite his private visit to France.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, asserted that President Tinubu remains fully engaged with domestic affairs and is in constant communication with his officials and security chiefs to address criminal activities across the nation.

Onanuga condemned Atiku’s statements, insinuating that they stem from his electoral defeat and are motivated by political opportunism rather than genuine concern for security issues. He urged Atiku to acknowledge Tinubu’s efforts in restoring peace and security throughout the country.

President Tinubu’s trip to France, which began last Wednesday and extends to the first week of February, has coincided with continued incidents of violence and criminal activities in Nigeria, including the tragic murders of two traditional rulers in Ekiti State on Monday, highlighting the ongoing security challenges facing the nation.
