China has called for diplomatic talks with the United States to address escalating trade tensions, as both economic giants continue to impose tariffs on each other’s imports.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, China’s commerce ministry spokeswoman, He Yongqian, emphasized the need for constructive discussions.
“China has always believed that both nations should take a cooperative and positive approach to resolving trade disputes,” she stated. However, she stressed that any negotiations must be based on mutual respect, equality, and shared benefits.
“Threats and intimidation will only lead to setbacks. We hope the US and China can work together to return to the right path—one based on dialogue and consultation,” she added.
Since returning to office in January, US President Donald Trump has intensified trade measures against major economic partners, including China, Canada, and Mexico. His administration argues that these nations have failed to curb the flow of illicit fentanyl and chemical precursors into the United States.
This month, Trump raised an existing 10% tariff on Chinese imports to 20%, escalating trade tensions further. Beijing responded with tariffs of up to 15% on key US agricultural products, including soybeans, pork, and chicken.
China, the world’s largest steel producer, also vowed on Wednesday to take “all necessary measures” in response to new US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
As the standoff continues, businesses and global markets remain on edge, watching for potential breakthroughs in negotiations.
