The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.is set to appeal a N10 million fine imposed on it over the alleged violation of the rights of the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) chief, Godwin Emefiele. Following a court order mandating the agency and the Federal Government to pay Emefiele N100 million for the purported rights violation, the EFCC has signaled its intent to challenge the financial penalty. the complex legal battles surrounding the case and reflects the ongoing legal contestations related to the alleged infringement on the rights of high-profile individuals.
The former CBN Chief had instituted a fundamental human rights suit against the agency, the Federal Government, and the AGF.
Meanwhile, after the judgement, the EFCC expressed dismay over the order of the court, saying Mr Emefiele’s detention was in line with the law.
“The agency has expressed dissatisfaction with a judgment of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court awarding N100 million damages against it in favour of a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele,” the EFCC spokesman
Dele Oyewale said in a statement.
“Justice O.A Adeniyi, on January 8, 2024, fined the Commission after he ruled that the Commission’s detention of Chief Emefiele in the course of his investigation was a violation of his right to liberty.
