Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has extended an official invitation to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and his fellow legislators for a high-level discussion. The meeting, slated for Monday, March 10, 2025, will take place at the Governor’s Office within the Government House, Port Harcourt.
The development follows the lawmakers’ recent ultimatum, urging the governor to present the 2025 state budget.
The announcement was detailed in a letter dated March 7, 2025, and signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tammy Danagogo.
“I hereby write in furtherance of His Excellency’s promise stated in my letter dated 5th March 2025 to notify you that His Excellency has received the Supreme Court judgment and has therefore directed me to invite you and your colleagues—the Honourable members of the Rivers State House of Assembly—to a meeting,” the letter stated.
Key issues on the agenda include securing a designated legislative chamber for Assembly proceedings, addressing unpaid allowances and remunerations of lawmakers, and deliberating on the presentation of the 2025 budget. Other pressing governance matters aimed at ensuring political stability in the oil-rich state will also be discussed.
Governor Fubara’s invitation comes in the wake of the Supreme Court’s recognition of Amaewhule and his colleagues as the legitimate members of the Rivers State Assembly. This ruling put an end to months of heated debates over the status of lawmakers aligned with former governor Nyesom Wike.
Earlier, the Rivers Assembly had issued a 48-hour deadline, which expired on Friday, demanding the governor present the budget. The ultimatum followed Fubara’s earlier move to present and sign the 2025 budget with a separate faction of four lawmakers led by Victor Oko-Jumbo.
The Supreme Court, however, ruled that Fubara failed to acknowledge the legitimacy of Amaewhule and his assembly members, further intensifying the political crisis in the state.
With this invitation, the governor seeks to bridge political divides and establish a roadmap for governance in Rivers State. All eyes are now on Monday’s meeting to see whether both factions can find common ground and bring stability to the legislative and executive arms of government.
