Federal Government Designates High-Risk Flood Zones from April to November 2024

The Federal Government has pinpointed local government areas susceptible to flooding from April to November, aiming to empower residents with advance knowledge for effective preparedness.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation disclosed that a segment of the 148 local government territories across 31 states nationwide has been identified as high-risk flood zones.
The revelation was made during the public presentation of the 2024 Annual Flood Outlook for Nigeria at the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency in Abuja.
This determination of flood-prone sectors will enable authorities and residents to plan for the forthcoming rainy season, thereby mitigating the repercussions of potential flooding.
Anticipated recommendations from the government may include measures to reduce flood hazards, such as enhancing flood defenses, educating the populace, and upgrading drainage infrastructure.
At another event, the Minister of Agricultural and Food Security, Mr. Abubakar Kyari, urged farmers to leverage seasonal rainfall predictions to enhance agricultural output.
Cultivators are advised to align their planting and harvesting cycles with the seasonal forecast, potentially increasing food yield and ensuring greater food security.
The government’s focus on proactive flood preparedness underscores its dedication to safeguarding lives, properties, and livelihoods from the perils of flooding.
By designating flood-prone states, the federal government takes a pivotal step towards promoting resilience and safety in the face of possible natural catastrophes. Both residents and agriculturalists are encouraged to adopt necessary measures to diminish risks and optimize productivity.
