Federal Government Rejects Sanusi’s Input on Tinubu’s Reforms

The Federal Government has dismissed any suggestion that Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II’s endorsement is essential to substantiate President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms. On Thursday, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris expressed disapproval of Sanusi’s recent criticisms, suggesting they stemmed from personal grievances rather than objective analysis.
Sanusi, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), had lauded the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of forex rates in the past but has now, according to Idris, “subtly criticized” these initiatives due to an apparent realignment of allegiances.
The Emir, during the Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Lecture in Lagos, declared that he would not extend his expertise to aid the Tinubu administration in addressing the nation’s economic challenges. His statement has drawn a sharp rebuke from the Federal Government.
Sanusi’s return to the throne as the Emir of Kano, following a four-year absence after his removal by Abdullahi Ganduje, has been fraught with controversy. His reinstatement, facilitated by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, is currently being contested in court by the deposed 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero. Allegations have also surfaced suggesting Federal Government bias in favor of Bayero, though the administration has refuted these claims.
In a firm rebuttal, Idris criticized Sanusi’s approach, stating it was unbecoming for a leader of his stature to prioritize personal grievances over national progress.
“It is regrettable that His Highness, given his distinguished background in economics, would allow personal dissatisfaction, based on perceived antagonism, to overshadow his obligation to truth and constructive engagement,” Idris remarked.
The minister further emphasized that the challenges Nigerians are currently enduring stem from necessary corrective measures after years of economic mismanagement. These reforms, though painful, are aimed at creating a stable and prosperous future.
“Rebuilding a nation requires unity of purpose, resilience, and collective sacrifice. It is imperative for respected leaders to avoid narratives that erode public trust. Instead, they should galvanize support for the collective vision of a prosperous Nigeria,” he added.
Idris called upon Sanusi and other influential figures to place the interests of the Nigerian people above personal and partisan considerations, urging collaboration over division during what he described as a critical juncture in the nation’s history.
“This is not a moment for unwarranted distractions. We need synergy, not schism, to secure the shared destiny of our nation,” the minister concluded.
