Allegations of Bribery Against Bobrisky
The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken action against several senior officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) following bribery allegations connected to the controversial figure Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky. The suspension aims to allow a full investigation into accusations that the officials accepted bribes to provide special treatment to Bobrisky during his imprisonment.
The bribery allegations surfaced through viral videos posted by blogger Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan. In these videos, Otse claimed that some officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accepted ₦15 million from Bobrisky to dismiss money laundering charges following his naira-spraying incident. Additionally, the blogger accused Bobrisky of paying more money to secure preferential treatment while serving his six-month prison sentence.
Bobrisky has since denied all allegations, and the EFCC, alongside the Nigerian Correctional Service, has launched investigations into the claims. A statement released on Thursday by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board confirmed the suspension of the officers involved, pending the outcome of the investigations.
Among the suspended officials are Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kirikiri, Lagos, and Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller at the Maximum-Security Custodial Centre, also in Kirikiri. Other officers affected include ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna from the Afikpo facility in Ebonyi State and Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu from the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja.
The Federal Government has assured the public that the ongoing investigations will be thorough and transparent. The outcomes will be made public once the inquiry is completed. This move represents a significant step toward ensuring accountability and maintaining integrity within Nigeria’s correctional system.
