In a decisive move to quell the escalating conflict between the Ifon and Ilobu communities, the Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has sanctioned the immediate imposition of a dusk-to-dawn curfew. This measure, spanning 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., is designed to restore order and prevent further violence in the embattled regions.
The directive was formally conveyed through a press release by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, who underscored the government’s resolve to prioritize peace and security. Addressing the media in Osogbo, the state capital, Alimi outlined the administration’s comprehensive strategy for resolving the communal dispute.
Details of the Curfew and Security Interventions
To prevent the situation from spiraling further, Governor Adeleke mandated the immediate enforcement of the curfew, effective Thursday, January 16, 2025, and extending indefinitely. The statement elaborated on additional actions taken by the state government, including the deployment of a multi-agency security task force.
“An assemblage of military, police, and civil defense personnel has been mobilized to the affected areas to avert further chaos,” the statement read.
Moreover, Alimi revealed plans to establish an expansive Committee of Stakeholders. This body will include representatives from the feuding communities, traditional rulers, military commanders, and other relevant entities to pursue a permanent resolution to the longstanding tensions.
Warning to Perpetrators of Violence
The government issued a stern admonition against individuals or groups attempting to incite unrest, warning that any such acts would attract full legal consequences. The statement emphasized, “Anyone found culpable of instigating or perpetuating violence will face stringent prosecution in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Governor Adeleke’s administration reaffirmed its dedication to fostering harmony and security within the state, urging stakeholders to cooperate in building lasting peace in the affected communities.
