In an act symbolizing justice and adherence to the rule of law, Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has reinstated Mr. Jonathan Paragua Zamuna as the Chief of Piriga Chiefdom in Lere Local Government Area. This decision aligns with a judgment delivered by the Industrial Court in Kaduna, which nullified the monarch’s removal under the preceding administration.

The dismissal of Chief Zamuna, executed in the waning days of Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s tenure, was rooted in recommendations from the state Ministry of Local Government Affairs. These recommendations cited Section 11 of the Traditional Institutions Law No. 21 of 2021 as their basis. Dissatisfied with his abrupt removal, Chief Zamuna sought redress from the National Industrial Court.

On June 14, 2024, the Industrial Court ruled decisively against the deposition, deeming it “null and void.” The court directed the reinstatement of Chief Zamuna, along with the restoration of his emoluments, entitlements, and privileges associated with the office of the Chief of Piriga Chiefdom.

During a formal ceremony at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House on Wednesday, Governor Sani presented Chief Zamuna with his appointment letter. The Governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to upholding justice, fairness, and due process.

In congratulating Chief Zamuna, the Governor urged the reinstated monarch to serve with impartiality, fostering harmony among the diverse ethnic and religious groups within the Chiefdom. “Our differences are divinely ordained,” Governor Sani stated, “but our coexistence within the same geographical boundary must reflect mutual respect and unity.”

The Governor further encouraged Chief Zamuna to draw wisdom from past experiences, saying, “Reflecting on the past equips us to become more resilient and effective leaders. You now hold a renewed opportunity to lead with integrity, courage, and empathy.”

In a moment of introspection, Governor Sani posed thought-provoking questions to those in attendance: “Have our actions promoted peace and understanding, or have they sown seeds of division? As leaders and citizens, what steps must we take to sustain the tranquility currently enjoyed in Kaduna State?”

He reiterated his administration’s unwavering stance on upholding the rule of law and compliance with judicial decisions, adding, “This is why we acted promptly in executing the Industrial Court’s directive concerning Chief Zamuna’s reinstatement.”

In his response, Chief Zamuna expressed profound gratitude to Governor Sani for restoring him to his throne. He highlighted the peaceful coexistence among the 12 ethnic groups within the Chiefdom and reaffirmed his commitment to promoting unity and inclusivity under his leadership.

Governor Sani’s decisive action underscores his administration’s dedication to fairness and reconciliation, setting a precedent for governance anchored in equity and respect for judicial authority.
