As the 2027 presidential race approaches, the Labour Party (LP) has reaffirmed its commitment to fielding Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State, as its presidential candidate.
Obi, who previously contested under the LP banner in the 2023 election, finished third, trailing behind Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the eventual winner, President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on a national television program, Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, asserted that Tinubu’s re-election bid would not be an easy ride.
“Tinubu will not have it easy in 2027. We are bringing back Peter Obi, and this time, they will see we mean business,” he declared.
During the interview, Arabambi also took a swipe at Kenneth Okonkwo, a Nollywood actor-turned-politician, who recently resigned from the Labour Party.
Describing Okonkwo’s departure as a relief, Arabambi accused him of betraying the party by allegedly working in favor of Tinubu and the ruling APC.
“His resignation is good riddance. He should refrain from discussing the Labour Party,” Arabambi stated.
Refuting claims of a leadership crisis, the LP spokesperson dismissed speculations about the party’s diminishing influence.
“The Labour Party is not in turmoil, nor is it fading away. These narratives are mere fabrications spread by detractors,” he affirmed.
With the 2027 elections drawing closer, the Labour Party appears determined to mount a formidable challenge against the incumbent administration, setting the stage for another intense political showdown.
