The Lagos State Government is poised to inaugurate the ‘Ounje Eko’ food markets, ushering in reduced prices on essential food commodities throughout the state. Commencing from Sunday, March 17, 2024, denizens of Lagos stand to gain from a 25% markdown on fundamental foodstuffs such as rice, beans, gari, bread, eggs, tomatoes, and pepper.
This endeavor is geared towards rendering vital food items more accessible and economical for Lagosians. Gbenga Omotoso, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, disclosed the launch of the ‘Ounje Eko’ food markets, underscoring the administration’s dedication to ensuring that residents can procure quality and reasonably priced food alternatives.
To forestall any semblance of exploitation and ensure broad dispersal of the discounted food commodities, the government will introduce a voucher system as part of the trial phase. This mechanism is tailored to facilitate just and impartial access to the discounted food markets, benefiting a broader cross-section of the Lagos populace.
Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s directive underscores the government’s preemptive approach to tackling food security and affordability issues among Lagos residents. Through the introduction of the ‘Ounje Eko’ food markets, the government aims to assuage the financial strain on households while fostering access to nourishing food selections across all precincts of Lagos State.
