President Bola Tinubu is set to embark on a diplomatic journey from Lagos to Accra, Ghana’s vibrant capital, on January 6, 2025. His visit is anchored on the momentous occasion of John Mahama’s inauguration as Ghana’s incoming president, slated for January 7. Accompanying Tinubu on this state mission will be the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, alongside a cohort of distinguished government functionaries.
This itinerary was disclosed in an official communiqué issued on Sunday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, Mahama, who previously held Ghana’s presidency from 2011 to 2017, secured a triumphant re-election in December 2024. He is poised to take over leadership from President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose tenure spans from 2017 to 2025.
Highlighting the significance of this diplomatic engagement, Onanuga noted that Tinubu’s forthcoming attendance stems from a personal invitation extended by the president-elect. Mahama had earlier visited Tinubu in December, underscoring their enduring camaraderie, which mirrors the robust bilateral relations between Nigeria and Ghana.
In his capacity as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Tinubu’s presence at this landmark event reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to fostering unity and collaboration within the West African subregion.
