Reading Time: 2 minutes

In a momentous operation, the Nigerian Navy stationed in Akwa Ibom state has detained 10 individuals suspected of
partaking in oil bunkering endeavors and confiscated a vessel named “Motor Tanker Queen Hansal” laden with alleged
crude oil products. Commodore Madumom Ide, the Commanding Officer of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Jubilee, disclosed
this development to reporters at Ibaka in Mbo LGA of the state.

The vessel was intercepted by NNS Orji on December 28, 2023, and subsequently transferred to NNS Jubilee’s custody
at the Forward Operating Base in Ibaka. Commodore Madumom Ide led journalists on an inspection of the vessel,
providing insights into the extent of the operation and the suspected involvements of the detained individuals.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the Nigerian Navy indicate that the vessel presently contains 100 metric
tonnes of crude oil. However, its maximum capacity allows for the carriage of up to 1,052 metric tonnes, equivalent
to over 7,000 barrels of oil, with an estimated value exceeding N800 million. This revelation underscores the
magnitude of illicit activities within the maritime domain.

Commodore Ide issued a stern admonition to individuals involved in economic sabotage, emphasizing the Nigerian
Navy’s resolute commitment to combating criminal activities and ensuring maritime security. The interception of
the vessel and the apprehension of the suspects underscore the Navy’s proactive measures in safeguarding Nigeria’s
territorial waters and combating illegal activities.

As part of the ongoing endeavors to address economic crimes, the apprehended suspects, along with the confiscated
crude oil and the vessel, will be transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further
investigation and prosecution. This collaborative approach underscores the significance of inter-agency synergy
in combating illicit activities and upholding the tenets of the rule of law.

The successful operation epitomizes the Nigerian Navy’s determination to uphold law and order within the maritime
realm, dissuading criminal elements from engaging in unlawful activities. The apprehension of individuals
implicated in oil bunkering sends a unequivocal message that such transgressions will not be countenanced,
and wrongdoers will be held accountable for their actions.

The confiscation of the vessel and the arrest of suspected oil thieves exemplify the efficacy of synchronized
maritime security endeavors in curtailing illicit activities and safeguarding Nigeria’s invaluable resources.
Looking ahead, the Nigerian Navy remains steadfast in its commitment to preserving maritime safety and security,
thereby safeguarding national interests and fostering economic prosperity.
