Introduction to Nigeria’s 6GHz Band Utilization

Nigeria is on the brink of a significant technological leap forward, as the country joins others in harnessing the power of the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi 6 technology. At the Annual Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on Emerging Technologies, Engr. Abraham Oshadami, Executive Commissioner for Technical Services at the NCC, welcomed stakeholders to this important milestone.

The initiative to unlock the potential of the 6GHz spectrum aligns with the forward-thinking leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. Since 2023, the federal government has restructured the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), unlocking new opportunities to enhance connectivity.

Stakeholders—ranging from licensees and industry operators to consumers—have played a pivotal role in shaping this strategic focus.
To achieve the ambitious goal of nationwide Wi-Fi 6 adoption, the NCC has centered its strategy around four key pillars: people, collaboration, data, compliance, and digitalization. These elements form the foundation of efforts to advance telecommunication services in Nigeria, aligning with the government’s broader development agenda. This includes policies focused on knowledge, innovation, infrastructure, and trade.

Collaboration remains crucial in driving technological innovation. Engaging with industry stakeholders through a policy of participatory regulation has allowed the NCC to gather vital feedback.

The ongoing deliberations regarding the utilization of the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi 6 and International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) are a testament to this collaborative approach.

Globally, the 6GHz band—spanning from 5925 MHz to 7125 MHz—offers an essential increase in spectrum availability. With increasing demand for high-speed internet and cutting-edge digital applications, this band will become pivotal. The majority of internet traffic, especially in residential settings, is distributed through Wi-Fi, making the expansion critical for modern digital needs.

As the current 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands are strained by growing demand, the introduction of the 6GHz band will ease the pressure. Wi-Fi 6 provides increased reliability, higher data throughput, and lower latency, essential for both residential and enterprise settings. It is expected to enhance connectivity for homes, businesses, and public spaces.

A significant milestone in this journey was the 2023 World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC-23). During this conference, global consensus was reached regarding the allocation of the 6GHz band for both Wi-Fi and IMT applications. This decision, born from years of in-depth studies, underscores the importance of the spectrum for the global community.

The consultative forum serves as a platform for stakeholders to provide critical feedback on how Nigeria should utilize this spectrum. This input will shape the NCC’s final decision-making process as it looks to improve digital services across the nation. Engr. Abraham Oshadami extended his gratitude to participants, emphasizing the importance of their contributions to the future of Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape.

The adoption of the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi 6 marks an exciting new chapter in Nigeria’s technological evolution. By fostering collaboration and embracing global best practices, Nigeria is poised to improve internet connectivity for its citizens, businesses, and industries, setting the stage for a more connected and prosperous future.
