The passing of veteran statesman Edwin Clark at the age of 97 has drawn a wave of tributes from prominent leaders across Nigeria. His family announced his demise in a statement on Tuesday, prompting an outpouring of condolences from top figures in politics and governance.
Leading the tributes, President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Clark as a voice for the Niger Delta and a patriotic advocate for national unity.
In a condolence message issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu acknowledged Clark’s unwavering dedication to justice, equity, and true federalism.
“Chief Clark spoke with conviction for the Niger Delta and the nation at large. His contributions to national discourse were always bold, principled, and deeply patriotic,” Tinubu stated.
Reflecting on his legacy, the President emphasized Clark’s significant role in championing regional development, social justice, and the fight for equity. He described him as a statesman whose contributions would be remembered for generations.
A Voice of Conviction and Fearlessness
The National Leader of Afenifere, Reuben Fasoranti, also paid tribute, highlighting Clark’s fearlessness and dedication to national discourse. According to Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, Fasoranti described him as a bold and uncompromising advocate for Nigeria’s restructuring.
“Chief Clark was steadfast in his pursuit of a fairer Nigeria. His voice was always prominent in the call for restructuring, particularly on matters affecting the South-South,” Fasoranti noted.
Extending his condolences, Fasoranti sympathized with Clark’s family, Delta State, and the entire South-South region over his passing.

In his tribute, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori described Clark as a political giant whose influence spanned six decades. He praised the late leader for his unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and development in the Niger Delta.
“To the Niger Delta, he was more than a leader—he was a fearless champion of our cause. He fought with passion and determination for fairness and justice,” Oborevwori stated in a post on his X handle.
He further described Clark’s passing as a personal loss, calling him a mentor and a source of wisdom. Oborevwori extended his condolences to Clark’s family, the people of Kiagbodo in Burutu Local Government Area, and the Ijaw nation.
“Chief Clark lived a fulfilled life. He came, he saw, and he conquered,” he added.

Born on May 25, 1927, in Kiagbodo, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, Edwin Clark remained a towering figure in Nigeria’s political landscape. His resolute advocacy for fairness, national cohesion, and true federalism cemented his status as one of Nigeria’s most respected elder statesmen.
