President Tinubu Named AU Champion for Health

President Bola Tinubu has been designated as the African Union (AU) Advocate for Human Resources for Health and Community Health Delivery Collaboration. This selection acknowledges President Tinubu’s ambitious and community-centered endeavors in the healthcare domain.

The acknowledgment of President Tinubu’s pledge to train 120,000 frontline healthcare personnel nationwide within a span of 16 months and to duplicate the count of primary healthcare facilities across all administrative regions of Nigeria is evident. Moreover, his proposal to double the admission capacity for healthcare personnel from authorized nursing and midwifery institutions and to institute a compensated volunteer youth cadre of social accountability officers to oversee the operational efficiency and financial probity of primary healthcare centers has been recognized.

The African Union deemed President Tinubu as the fitting advocate for this continental endeavor. The designation was endorsed by the Committee of Heads of State and Government of the Africa CDC, led by President Azali Assoumani, the President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union.

President Tinubu has received an invitation to deliver an address at the Ministerial Executive Leadership Programme (MELP) themed, ‘Influential leadership in healthcare: a comprehensive governmental strategy’, to be held at the Africa CDC Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This occasion is slated for Saturday, February 17, 2024, in conjunction with the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of AU Heads of State and Government.

In his newfound capacity, President Tinubu is anticipated to make substantial contributions to the advancement of healthcare governance in Africa. The Tinubu administration’s endeavors have attracted international investments in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, concentrating on state-of-the-art infrastructure, apparatus, and top-tier manpower to enhance accessibility to superior healthcare services for all Nigerians.
