Rivers State Governor Vows To End Piracy As Maritime Workers Seek Release Of Abducted Colleagues, Others

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed strong disapproval of the escalating piracy targeting boat operators and travelers within the state’s waterways, firmly stating that his administration will no longer condone such unlawful acts.

Governor Fubara’s declaration came during a meeting with representatives from the Rivers Commercial District of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) at the Government House in Port Harcourt. The union had formally approached the government to raise alarm over the growing insecurity along the state’s waterways, urging for immediate governmental action.

Speaking through the State Head of Civil Service, George Nwaeke, Governor Fubara reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of lives and property for all residents. He emphasized that the state government is fully prepared to confront the menace of piracy head-on.

Chairman of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Rivers Commercial District, Israel Waribo-Pepple, highlighted the most recent attack that occurred on August 24. In this incident, a workers’ boat traveling from Bonny to Port Harcourt was ambushed by armed men, resulting in the abduction of two passengers. Waribo-Pepple further disclosed another alarming incident in Port Harcourt, where pirates are demanding a ransom of 10 million naira for the release of hostages.

The union’s appeal to the government underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures across the state’s maritime routes, as they continue to witness a rise in criminal activities.

 

 

The Head of Civil Service has reiterated Governor Fubara’s unyielding resolve to eradicate the scourge of piracy that has long plagued the waterways of Rivers State. In a stern declaration, he emphasized that the persistent criminal activities of sea marauders would no longer be tolerated, as they undermine the security and economic stability of the region.

Addressing the urgent concerns raised by the Maritime Workers’ Union, Mr George assured that government is deploying comprehensive measures to fortify maritime security. He revealed that a multi-layered strategy, involving enhanced patrols and the deployment of advanced surveillance technology, would be implemented to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of those who rely on the state’s waterways for their sustenance.
