Cabo Verde Achieves WHO Certification as Malaria-Free, Signifying a Historic Breakthrough in Global Malaria Eradication.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially certified Cabo Verde as a malaria-free country, marking a historic milestone in the global fight against malaria. This achievement places Cabo Verde among the ranks of 43 countries and 1 territory that have received this certification from WHO. Notably, Cabo Verde is the third country in the WHO African region to achieve malaria-free status, following Mauritius and Algeria, certified in 1973 and 2019, respectively.

The certification of Cabo Verde as malaria-free holds immense significance given the high malaria burden on the African continent, where approximately 95% of global malaria cases and 96% of related deaths occurred in 2021. Cabo Verde’s success in eliminating malaria showcases the country’s dedication to public health and sets a positive example for other nations facing similar challenges.

Beyond the health implications, the certification is expected to drive positive development in Cabo Verde. The systems and structures established for malaria elimination have not only strengthened the health system but will also contribute to the fight against other mosquito-borne diseases, such as dengue fever. Furthermore, the malaria-free status allows travelers from non-malaria endemic regions to visit Cabo Verde without the concern of local malaria infections, eliminating the need for preventive treatment measures. This has the potential to boost tourism, a sector that contributes significantly to the country’s GDP, accounting for approximately 25%. The certification stands as a testament to Cabo Verde’s commitment to public health and its potential to thrive as a malaria-free destination.
