In a gripping semifinal clash that unfolded amidst palpable tension, the Super Eagles of Nigeria dashed the hopes of Bafana Bafana of South Africa at the battleground of Bouake, securing their passage to the finals of the African Cup of Nations.
Despite the clock ticking away, standard regulation time proved insufficient to differentiate between the powerhouses of the African continent. Goals from Troost Ekong and Mokoena, both from the penalty spot, maintained the deadlock at 1-1 even after an additional 30 minutes of extra time.
However, the Super Eagles emerged triumphant, buoyed by the stellar performance of goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who thwarted two penalty kicks from the South Africans. Kelechi Iheanacho’s decisive penalty sealed the victory, propelling the Super Eagles back to Abidjan to confront the host nation, Cote d’Ivoire, in the finals and keep their aspirations of clinching a fourth trophy alive.
In parallel, a Federal Government delegation, spearheaded by the Vice President, was present to bear witness to this exhilarating spectacle.
