The Chairman of the Presidential Tax and Fiscal Policy Reform, Taiwo Oyedele, suggests that area boys can be trained for tax collection and paid decent salaries to redirect their activities. He also addresses efforts made to alleviate the burden of multiple taxes at the state and local government levels, considering them as a nuisance.
In response to questions about the progress of tax reforms, Oyedele acknowledges the impatience of Nigerians and expresses a desire to see tangible results. He highlights that fiscal policy matters may take longer to show results compared to monetary policy decisions. The committee submitted its first report in October with over 20 recommendations, and only about three have been fully implemented to date.
Oyedele emphasizes the significance of the Emergency Economic Intervention Bill, which aims to amend various laws to implement crucial changes for price stability, relief for impacted individuals and businesses, and improvements in foreign exchange management. While acknowledging the slower pace of fiscal policy implementation, he underscores the importance of collaboration between fiscal and monetary authorities and aligning with trade policies to achieve comprehensive results.
