In response to the escalating security challenges within the city, Governor Wike expressed his disapproval of the frequent travels undertaken by area council chairmen. The Nation reported that Wike had initiated an emergency closed-door meeting involving heads of security agencies in the FCT and Chairmen of the six Area Councils, addressing the pressing issue of kidnappings and killings orchestrated by bandits in Abuja.
Wike emphatically conveyed his dissatisfaction with the chairmen’s recurring absence from their responsibilities, particularly during a period of heightened security concerns within their respective councils. The governor stressed his discontent with the practice of chairmen leaving their posts to travel, only to be absent when security challenges arise, shifting the responsibility to the FCT Minister.
Expressing his concerns, Wike declared, “This time around, we will not be happy when Area Council Chairmen will abdicate their responsibility and travel out. We have gotten reports that council chairmen travel anytime, and then if anything happens, of course, they will not call anybody’s name, they will call the FCT Minister. However, we cannot fold our hands, we have invited them to a meeting this afternoon to see how we can also resolve the problem.” The governor’s proactive approach seeks to address the issue and foster a collaborative solution among all stakeholders involved in maintaining security within the city.
