The administration of Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture has suspended academic operations and bolstered security measures to prevent further unrest on campus following student demonstrations against an increase in tuition fees.

Numerous students of the esteemed institution were observed engaging in discussions and departing the premises in small clusters under strict surveillance on Tuesday evening, while the visible presence of security personnel aimed to deter any potential demonstrations.

A senior student, identifying himself as Kelechi Ofoedu, disclosed to our correspondent that the upheaval disrupted the ongoing first-semester examinations, which commenced on Monday, urging the intervention of the Federal Government.

However, following the protest that resulted in the vandalization of the administrative block and other facilities, the vice-chancellor issued a circular on behalf of the Senate, announcing the indefinite closure of the university.

Citing safety concerns arising from confrontations between students and security personnel that resulted in property damage and student injuries, the university administration issued a statement attributing the chaos to “miscreants” who seized control of the campus, causing destruction to property and vehicles.

Efforts to contact Vice Chancellor Professor M. O. Iwe for clarification regarding allegations of excessive force and students’ grievances proved fruitless, as he pledged to provide the press with an update on the situation.
