The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) unveils the outcomes of the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for individual candidates throughout Nigeria. This rigorous assessment took place in Nigeria spanning from Friday, October 27, 2023, to Wednesday, December 20, 2023. The Coordination of Examiners and the Marking of Candidates’ Scripts occurred at seven designated venues in Lagos, Ibadan, Akure, Benin, Enugu, Uyo, and Kaduna, spanning from Tuesday, January 16, to Tuesday, January 30, 2024. A collective sum of four thousand one hundred and sixty-two (4,162) Examiners took part in the Coordination and Marking Endeavor.
As per a declaration endorsed by the acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Nigeria, Moyosola F. Adesina, on behalf of the Head of the National Office, a total of 80,904 candidates undertook the examination, comprising 39,790 males and 41,114 females, constituting 49.18% and 50.82%, respectively. Among these candidates, 46,267, representing 57.19%, achieved credit and beyond in a minimum of five (5) subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics.
Moreover, 35,830 candidates, equivalent to 44.29%, attained credit and beyond in a minimum of five (5) subjects, encompassing English Language and Mathematics. Within this cohort, 17,631 were male candidates, while 18,199 were female candidates, exhibiting a marginal progression of 2.13% in performance compared to antecedent years.
The statement elucidated the distinction between the examination for private candidates and that for school candidates, underscoring that private candidates possess the liberty to select their subjects based on their specific requirements. Consequently, it is deemed inappropriate to juxtapose the performance of private candidates directly with that of school candidates.
Nonetheless, the results of 7,192 candidates, amounting to 8.89% of the total candidate pool, face withholding due to documented instances of examination malpractice. Investigations are underway, and the determinations of the pertinent committee will be communicated directly to the implicated candidates.
Remarkably, the number of candidates registering for the examination witnessed a surge of 10.07% compared to the 2022 enrollment figure, with 85,600 candidates registering for the examination. This escalation underscores the sustained significance and pertinence of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination among private candidates in Nigeria.
