Nigerians Mock IGP for Armed Forces Remembrance Day Attendance Amid Abuja Kidnapped Sisters Incident

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and its spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, face public backlash following pictures posted on the force’s X handle on Monday featuring the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, alongside military officers during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Abuja.

In the group photos, Egbetokun was seated with other dignitaries, including the Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Naval Staff, Emmanuel Ogala, and Chief of Air, Hassan Abubakar. The pictures were captioned with a message expressing remembrance for fallen heroes.

However, criticism ensued as X users condemned the police for celebrating while the country grapples with escalating insecurity, particularly in Abuja. Many questioned the timing of the celebration, highlighting the ongoing abduction of five sisters in Abuja and the failure of the police to fulfill their promise to rescue them.

The abduction incident involved six sisters and their father from their home in the Bwari Area Council of Abuja. Although the father was released later, one of the sisters, Najeeba, lost her life due to the kidnappers’ actions when the ransom couldn’t be met. The police had pledged to rescue the remaining five sisters, with the ransom demand raised to N100 million.

Critics expressed frustration, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the ongoing kidnappings and insecurity in Abuja instead of participating in celebratory events. The disconnect between official engagements and the pressing issues faced by citizens drew significant attention and criticism on the police’s X platform.

The public outcry reflects the prevailing sentiment that authorities should prioritize addressing security challenges over participating in ceremonial events, especially during times of heightened insecurity across the nation. The incident serves as a focal point for broader discussions on the responsibilities of law enforcement and the need for effective responses to prevailing security concerns.
